What an amazing day. My wife Lissy and I just got back from viewing the first ultrasound of our new baby. At least with me, seeing the ultrasound for the first time is when the “we are really having a baby” moment truly sets in. I think that my brain knows it before I see the ultrasound, but after seeing it my heart knows too.
Anyway… We are having a GIRL!
I was completely nervous going into the ultrasound today. Excited, for sure, but far more nervous. At first I wasn’t sure why, but now that I have had a chance to relax a bit I realized it was because the last time we went in for an ultrasound was when we found out we lost what would have been our second child. The way this baby has been beating Lissy up from the inside, I knew that I didn’t have much to worry about. That said, it was great to hear that everything looks perfect with our new child.
When we were pregnant with our son, Finn, people always asked, “Are you hoping for boy or a girl?” I always responded the same way, “I don’t care. I just want our child to be happy and healthy.” It was true. I didn’t care about gender or beauty or even intelligence. Finn turned out to be a wicked-smart, great looking boy. But to this day I still just want him to be happy & healthy.
I have the exact same wish for our new baby. I am absolutely thrilled to be having a girl. A little more nervous than I would have been with a second son, to be sure. I think that I have raising boys down pretty well. But more than that, the realization that I will be raising a teenage girl one day is a new one for me. (As my buddy Eric just sent, “Someday boys are going to want to sleep with your daughter. [evil laugh inserted here]“) Based on that comment, I guess I am not the only guy to have mild teenage daughter panic on the brain upon hearing this news.
Wow! Lissy and I are going to have a son and a daughter. Finn is going to have a younger sister. The Grandparents are going to have their first grand-daughter — the male genes are strong in the Sampson clan. What an amazing day.

Congratulations! We have one girl and it’s so much fun! I didn’t think I cared for the whole “dressing” up that folks kept saying was fun with a girl, but at least for me it is turning to be true. Pigtails, skirts with baby chubby legs, red shoes, etc.
